The Employment Rights Bill

Helen in Sainsburys talking to employees

This week we’re going to be debating the Government’s new Employment Rights Bill in Parliament. That Bill might sound like a good thing, but in practice it is going to make it harder for businesses to employ people. The government’s own impact assessment forecasts it’ll lead to thousands of fewer jobs. Fewer jobs means fewer opportunities for people and bodes ill for economic growth.

The Bill particularly targets flexible job contracts, which are often the best option for parents and young people who want to do a few hours work a week around other commitments like small children and education. Coming so soon after the Government’s National Insurance rise and lowering of the threshold for pension contributions, it means businesses are less likely to take someone on who doesn’t want to work full time.

If the Government really wants growth, it should listen to businesses. Many local employers have already been in touch with me, but if you haven’t and are worried about your business’ future, don’t hesitate to reach out and share your concerns. I will always try to do what I can to help.
