Pubs are at the heart of communities, yet the Chancellor is raising taxes on 1,000 pubs in Kent and our fantastic ones in Faversham and Mid Kent are struggling.

They’ve just been hit with paying higher National Insurance Contributions, a higher National Minimum Wage and business rates which are doubling.

Soon after entering office, the Government agreed public sector pay rises to above inflation levels without having the money at the time to front it or asking for any improved services in return. Now they are forcing businesses, like local pubs, to shoulder the cost of their choices.

Local pubs have told me these are really scary times. They don’t want to increase prices for their customers, but rising costs and Government policies are leaving them with little choice. Many are struggling to keep staff on, hire new workers, or even stay open.

When I was Exchequer Secretary I introduced a lower alcohol duty rate on draught beer and cider purchased in pubs, and during Covid we supported businesses with grants, loans and temporary tax cuts. Pubs are so much more than just places to eat and drink. If you’re a local pub and are feeling the cost of these changes, please do reach out – I will always try to do what I can to help.
